I want to do some recordings in games I play. How do I record, and what programs if any to use?

BTW, if you just want to record yourself playing in a way that you can replay in-game, you can use tools already built-in to UT (you can swap these files with other players so that they can watch them too, it's just that UT has to be running to view them - whereas FRAPS et al are all about creating movie files that you can watch in an external media player).

To manually record a UT demo, open the console and type

demorec

...where is what the recorded file will be called in your Unreal Tournament system directory (the file extension will be '.dem', you don't need to include that in the , it'll be added automatically)

To stop recording (which happens automatically when you disconnect from a server, or the current game ends), open the console and type

demostop

To replay a demo you've previously recorded, open the console and type

demoplay

...which does all of the same stuff with point-and-clickery (oh, and you can set it to start recording automatically whenever you play - which is kind of handy. Although I found it made UT crash on ND for some reason, and you'll end up with lots of demo files taking up space in your UT folder! Alternatively you can set a 'demorec' keybind, so that you make a recording with the tap of a button).

Ah, yea, for that you'd need to convert them to another format - actually, it's a bit more crude than that - but you'll need Fraps (as Shadow and Jesse suggested) or Movie Unreal (which Bioly mentioned above), or another equivalent application.

I've never used either, but all of these things work in essentially the same way - they sit in the background when you 'demoplay' a recorded .dem file, and take lots of screenshots - constantly.

You know how animated film is just a whole lot of still images flashed onscreen really quickly, one after another (usually there are 24 images - or frames - for each second you see), like a flip-book? Well, it's the same principle.
Fraps would automatically take, for example, 24 screenshots per-second while you're watching a demo file play back onscreen, and dump them to a directory on your hard disk.

When the demo file finishes, you'd tell Fraps to stop capturing what's happening onscreen.

All of the media files you commonly come across are basically just a bunch of image files 'clumped' together - DivX and Xvid and Quicktime are all MPEG-4 video formats, and MPEG-4 uses JPEG pictures as the underlying mechanism for storing imagery.

I've just had a quick skim over the Fraps 'about' page, and it sounds like it turns all of the screenshots it takes into a movie file for you, and will also record sound - from what I remember you had to re-add that in afterwards before. It'll also record while you play with only a "small overhead".

The Wikipedia page for Fraps also mentions Taksi, which is - apparently - a free, open source version inspired by Fraps (but doesn't do sound capture at the moment).

From what Bioly says above, it sounds like Movie Unreal doesn't create a video file (or do sound capture?) from the screenshots automatically, so you'd need to use - as he's suggested - something like VirtualDub to 'stitch' them altogether into a movie at the end. It's free, though.

Anyway, what you'll end up with, ultimately, is a video file you can play in whatever media player you like - or upload to a sharing site like Youtube.

Taksi doesn't support audio recording. If you want a free recording tool that does both audio and video recording, try Camstudio:

There's one very good free tool I used to record some UT videos in Linux. Unfortunately, there's no Windows binary (only compile from source option). It also doesn't support audio recording (I find it unnecessary, you can put your favorite music track instead). I was able to record videos in high resolution (1024x768) with no lag. It takes too much hard drive space though, one match took 30GBs! (because it saves videos as RAW (no compression, just a bunch of BMPs forming a video) Fraps and the likes compress videos to AVI while recording)
